Today we present our brand new design for the façade of a new building in Subotica, a town in the North of Serbia. This was the first time for us to design such an object, and now we are more than happy with the results. This project was part of an international architectural competition that started to find an ideal solution for a unique façade design in the town center.
Context and Location of the Project
This façade will cover a brand-new commercial and residential building in the old part of town. The task was to develop a design that would meet the needs of future residents and professional offices. A new object will be built between two well-known buildings of great historical value. On its right side is the town`s Polyclinic. This object has state protection and it was built between two World Wars. On the left is the town`s only Gymnasium designed in a baroque style. It was built in 1895 by a great Hungarian architect Ferenc Raichle.
Architectural Heritage and Design Requirements
As stated in the competition form, the architectural design of the façade had to follow the context of a protected architectural heritage in Subotica. In other words, the investors were looking for an adequate response to the surrounding architecture. It was of the utmost importance to choose materials that would maintain the building`s original aesthetics. Our team came out with this design and a few weeks later we were rewarded with some good news. Not only did our project get the first honorable mention, but the investors decided to buy it!

Inspiration Behind the Design
The basic inspiration for this project came from our own urge for movement. We believe that motion and constant changes are the main features of architecture as a physical expression. In this design, a fourth dimension is present as a symbol of the continuity of the time dimension. This building can change its appearance both daily and during a long period of time. Moreover, to experience its beauty in the best possible way, the viewers must move around.
Transition from Tradition to Modernity
The movement also marks a shift from the old architecture to more contemporary expression. The building is no longer static, monumental character. Its motion and rhythm appear as the basic elements of the facade. As rendering themselves, our solution is both playful and powerful. We believe it responds well to the existing environment and the spirit of this lovely town. These are all the reasons why we are so excited to receive such recognition for our work.
This week, the organizers of the competition announced an exhibition in which all the submitted works will be presented. The exhibition will open this Friday (June 3rd) in Subotica in The Raichle Palace at 7 pm. We will definitely be there and hope to see you, too.
